The Time Traveler's Wife

Buy Cheap The Time Traveler's Wife

Buy Low Price From Here Now

A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger's cinematic storytelling that makes the novel's unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant.

An enchanting debut and a spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love, The Time Traveler's Wife is destined to captivate readers for years to come.

 "Nice Fluff Reading" 2009-08-29
By AlySedai (NN, VA)
I'll be honest. I had owned this book for some time, but didn't pick it up to read it until the movie came out. I'm one of those people who refuses to see the movie if I haven't read the book.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up the book. At first, the whole plot seems a little absurd. Here's a man who time travels around with seemingly no explanation, rhyme, or reason. But then the story got to me. And I got to thinking. It is more than just that. This is a love story (sure, at some points it borders on cheezy Harlequinesqe plot) that asks the question do we have any choice with whom we fall in love? When Henry first comes to Claire, he is so in love with her...and he basically pushes her toward being in love with him. But he is in his 40's and she is only 6. Then, in the future, Claire finally meets Henry...who has no idea who she is. And she is so deeply in love with him, that he cannot help but fall in love with her. It's an interesting paradox. They basically have zero choice in the matter of the relationship. I think that's one of the most interesting things about this book.

All in all, it is a good fluff read. If you enjoy a good love story, it's a great book to curl up with and read. It has an interesting story, lots of romance, and deals with some serious topics, if albeit very briefly. Sure, some of the characters could have been explored more in depth, and that probably would have made the book stronger. It is, however, a good read which doesn't require a whole lot of thought to get into...which, for a summer read, is perfect.

"Entertaining but not a challenge" 2009-08-29
By Book Dork (Southern California)
The Time Traveler's Wife is the type of book you bring to the beach, the airport, or the doctor's office; entertaining but definitely not a literary challenge.

What Made Me Finish:

- The actual premise of the novel, time travel and how it connects two people throughout their lives, was interesting and unique.

- The skipping around through different time periods was fun and nostalgic.

- Niffenegger does a good job capturing and describing the emotions the characters feel during the various phases of their lives.

- While I do have issues with the writing, I will say that the author does use foreshadowing in an effective way. Certain events and situations are alluded to throughout the novel that make you want to continue reading in order to find out what really does happen.

Problems

- Every time the narration switches from Henry to Clare the author indicates this with a name heading. I found this very unnecessary; the reader should be perceptive enough to determine who's narrating by the style, tone, and events. I feel that she is writing "for the masses," assuming that the people who are reading aren't intelligent enough to figure this out. While this may be the case, let us all remember the Pygmalion Effect.

- The writing as a whole isn't impressive; descriptions often seemed forced, as does several instances of dialogue.

- At times certain elements of time travel became repetitive; I understand that Henry is naked every time he travels. I don't need to be told every time this happens that he is embarrassed, running around naked and trying to find clothes. It's a given.

- I felt that there should have been more attention paid to the idea and struggle of changing fate; it appeared to be an underlying theme in the novel when it probably should have been more prominent.

I appreciated the imagination that went into developing the plot and characters but was a little disappointed in the literary quality. I recommend it as a "fun book," perhaps sandwiched between some Dostoyevsky and DeLillo.

"Neat concept but poor execution" 2009-08-29
By Amazon Buyer
I give this book kudos for being a page turner and for having a really neat concept done quite well. My problem with this book is that character development. The book coins itself as an epic love story, and yet I never really feel the love. The emotions and the reasons behind them do not seem very real. For this reason, I never really fell in love with the characters like I have in other "romance" novels like "The Notebook."

Pros: Very interesting concept

Cons: Poor character development

"Review of The Time Traveler's Wife" 2009-08-29
By P. R. Lewis (Southeast LA, USA)
The format of the novel is that of reading journal entries for the two main characters, Henry and Clare. Since time travel is involved, the entries are listed giving the date and the age of the characters, however, not in chronological order. This provides the reader with a feel for the spontaneity of time travel. The novel is neither boring nor predictable. I found that the journalistic format allows the reader to develop a personal understanding and an attachment to the characters and to the unique situation they endure throughout their lives. Without giving the story away, I'll say that I enjoyed it immensely - it kept my interest, kept me reading long after I should have been asleep, and had me going through a full range of emotions. The characters had a deep love for one another, but I can't imagine trying to sustain a relationship under the hardship created by time traveling. All in all a very good book. Well-crafted writing; the author fills the book with detailed descriptions that create visions in the reader's mind. The author has given the timeworn idea of a romance novel a unique twist for the enjoyment of her readers. You won't go wrong with this book. It's a keeper.

"Reads like a first draft" 2009-08-05
By Peter Wright (Portland, OR United States)
Paranoia reads like a first draft -- lacks polish and development, character, richness of setting. The result is a bland walk through the life of a jaded protagonist. There is fodder for a good tale here, though in this packaged it's severely underdeveloped. Like other reviewers, I found myself skimming faster and faster as I moved through the book, very disappointed in the overall experience.

Normally, I'd simply stop reading, and wouldn't give much time to writing in about books I don't enjoy. In this case, there appears to be a more systemic problem: The notion of the free download for the Kindle is suspect. That this book has been propelled to the top of the downloads list naturally is bunk, and further illustrates for me that the best sellers list is likely contaminated with publisher kickbacks.

"Yes, yes, yes, super good read" 2009-08-05
By Gina K (PA, USA)
Come on folks, this Kindle book is for FREE and it is great! I laughed, I bit my nails. I read nonstop. The story starts off with a disgruntled cubicle dweller who decides to make a stand by hacking into the corporate account to fund a retirement party for the loading dock guy. Funny and immature, our hero is quickly caught and thrown into a "deal with the devil," his boss. Spy on a competitor or get turned in and go to jail. So off he goes, playing undercover employee in the competitor company. Can he pull off finding out the biggest secret the rivals have while trying to stay sane with a crazy father? And, he grows, in maturity, commitment, responsibility. Lots of suspenseful moments as he meanders his way through the new place only to land squarely at the top, as right hand guy to the big gun. Then, in another evolutionary step, his remaining shred of conscience kicks in and he decides that HE will start calling the shots....Won't spoil the story by giving away the ending, but after you read it, tell me...did you REALLY see it coming? Can't wait for a sequel.

This book literally kept me awake at nights. It's so engrossing and exciting that I just couldn't put it down--I literally just passed out reading it each night and woke up the next morning starting it again. Luckily I was on vacation when I began it. I haven't felt this way about a book in a long time and I'm just so excited to have found a great new author to add to my favorites!

"Engrossing Corporate Thriller From Beginning to End!!" 2009-08-04
By Kevin Currie-Knight (Newark, Delaware)
I often have a hard time with thrillers. One reason for this is that most of the ones I've read tend to have very lackluster characters. Another reason is that too many thrillers I've read cross the line of believability and become so unreal that it becomes hard to take them seriously.

This is why I was pleasantly surprised by Joseph Finder's "Paranoia." The main character, reluctant corporate spy Adam Cassidy, is quite well drawn, as is his relationships to other characters. Needless to say, the plot is very well thought out and well paced. (This is "needless to say" because I understand that this is typical of Finder's novels). While this very complex tale of corporate espionage and con-artistry could have become over-the-top and unbelievable, Finder straddles the line well between being intriguing and still staying plausible.

What I liked best about Paranoia was Finder's ability to convey the main character's struggle with the divided loyalty of espionage. Who is Cassidy working for: the "former" boss who is blackmailing him into being a mole, or the "new" employer who he is spying on (but growing to like)? And can Adam Cassidy keep his stories straight when telling different people different things in order to avoid detection? The ending, while not entirely unforeseeable, is quite marvelous and strangely satisfying.

Paranoia is a top-notch thriller with unbelievable intensity. For a 484 pager, it moves suprisingly well. Quite simply, this is a book that any thriller fan (especially those who frantasize about the business world beyond cubicles and spreadsheets) should not miss!

"Its not all stainless steel - but its a great buy and its a Weber!" 2009-08-02
By M. Wortner (Creston, CA USA)
The S-320 is a very good value for the price here on Amazon.com. Like many, we checked the reviews as well as the big box and some local stores. We went with Amazon.com because of their service (we have had other large purchases delivered previously and delivery service is excellent), the price (at least 20% below other retailers and shipping was free) and the selection (one stop shopping for all of the accessories) AND its a WEBER!

I would agree with all of the "5" raters that this is an excellent grill, well built, solid metal (stainless steel, painted steel and painted aluminum) and it grills great. So far steaks, chicken, sausages, lobsters, veges and corn on the cob - grilled to perfection. One of the best portable gas grills we have owned. We are very happy and recommend this grill - but there are a few things the potential buyer should be aware of and therefore our "4" rating...

1) Its not all stainless steel. The frame is grey painted steel and the sides are grey paint aluminum. It looks great and will like last for many years - but its not all stainless steel

2) Assembly took about 3 hours. Throw out the wrench provided - it is useless. You need a standard socket set and wrench as well as needle nose pliers and screw drivers. If you do not have these tools in your tool box you should not attempt assembly. The instructions are straight forward however it does take time, patience and assembly-know-how to put this grill together out of the box.

3) The box delivered is big and about 180lbs. Make sure you have the delivery service place the box where you plan to assemble the grill. In the garage, on the patio or deck etc. You can not move the delivered box with a dolly, a set of two furniture dollies is what we used to move it into my shop for assembly.

4) Assemble on a flat surface and I suggest on top of a blanket or tarp so you do not scratch the painted metal parts.

This is one great WEBER grill that will last for many years. Take your time to assemble and enjoy it. We are.

 "Generally pleased" 2009-06-15
By I Love NY (New York City)
I did a lot of research and decided on this product. Is the stainless steel version worth the extra $200? I guess the answer to that question will be in the longevity of the product. I bought the cover that goes with the unit, so my expectations are that this unit will last me 15-plus years.

I have been using charcoal for years, so I was somewhat anti-propane. I already love the controlability of gas, particlarly for roasts. Gas also lets you grill spontaneously. Turn the thing on, and you can grill within minutes. Without wishing to sound sexist, my wife has already decided that she will use it with the kids during the week while I am working. She would never have used the old charcoal grill.

The construction of the unit is very good, with my only complaint being that the material is a little in the thin side, making it prone to bending if you aren't careful. I love closed-top indirect-heat cooking, and this thing is amazing. I grill so much more now that I don't have to do all the preparation I used to go through with my old charcoal unit.

Bottom line. This grill is the perfect compromise between the flimsy, low-end models, and the ridiculously-expensive top-of-the-line models like Viking.

 "Very Nice!" 2009-04-14
By linus_nc (NC)
It arrived on time. The shipping carton was in excellent condition, no damage to outside of box at all. Deliverer dropped it off right where we wanted it. It took me 3 hours to assemble it because I like to take my time and I had some interruptions. The instruction pictures could have been a little more accurate though. Some parts had 2 holes and picture only shows one. I cooked with it 3 times so far and it works perfectly. My only issue would be the clamp that holds the propane tank for measuring the tank weight. This clamp is not universal and did not fit my propane style tank (blue rhino). I managed to squeeze it in anyway though but only got 2 threads with the wing nut. Otherwise... PERFECT grill. I strongly recommend it.

 "Simply the best!" 2009-03-24
By Salvatz (NY)
This is my first Weber grill and it has met every one of my expectations. I purchased my grill from homeverything.com, which I also highly recommend. No tax and free shipping also help

The grill was drop shipped and arrived in perfect condition. The driver waited patiently until I unpacked everything and inspected each piece.

I am a pretty handy guy and the grill took me about 1 hour to put together but the instructions are very easy to follow. There are quite a few parts, so take the time to lay them out carefully and be careful not to scrape any of the stainless steel pieces.

The packing is incredible. Everything is ensconced in cardboard and every stainless surface has a layer of plastic covering on it.

After assembling everything, light the grill and let it heat up for at least 1 hour. Let is get to at least 600 degrees. There is a lot of grease and other oils that you should burn off before you start cooking. A pretty nasty smell will also result as part of this process. Don't let the grill get to hot because you don't want to discolor the stainless on the outside. Periodically open the hood and let a little heat and smoke out from time to time.

Once you are ready to go, let the grill heat up to about 400 degrees. Read the Weber guide about direct and indirect grilling. The grill works absolutely unbelievable. The grill heats evenly and quickly and there are NO hot spots or cold spots on the grill. The grease drains beautifully into a small disposable catch basin. I heard a few knocks on the grease catch but I found it to be very easy to change the pan and that the process works great.

As far as the different models out there, be very careful. There are a few flavors out there that don't offer a stainless grates. Most of theses are found at the big warehouse stores. If you are purchasing a model that starts with an S, you are ok. If you are purchasing a model that begins with an E, watch out. Most of the guts are porcelain and cast iron and not stainless steel. The EP series (P=Premium) adds the following

* Stainless steel rod cooking grates

* Stainless steel Flavorizer bars

* Premium colors include copper along with black, dark blue and green

As for maintenance, buy a good cover. Weber makes the 7553 cover for the 320 series. It is a great cover but the vents in the cover does let some water in. that can collect on the stainless side trays. If I had more time, I might have looked for another cover. People have the misconception that stainless means it cannot be damaged. That is not true. Stainless steel scratches very easy, so use a cleaner made for stainless steel. Certain types of Stainless steel will also develop rust. So cover the grill and take care of your investment.

The bottom line here is that this grill is superb. Take care of it and it will last you 15-20 years. That is if you live that long with all the barbeque food you will want to eat.

My Genesis S-320 was delivered well within the projected delivery timeframe. The box was quite large but everything was very professionally and securely packaged. There were a lot of parts and I took a leisurely 4 hours to assemble it. The instructions were mostly pictorial and very easy to follow. The parts fit very nicely. After completion, I attached a full propane tank (purchased separately). Surprisingly, it lighted at the first press of the igniter button. I have cooked on it several times and could not be happier. The fact that it is such a nice looking unit is a plus. I have had numerous compliments.

"No cover bracket, no thermometer" 2009-07-03

My husband will cook on no grill other than a Weber kettle, and we looked at this one versus the Performer. Just brought home the new 22.5" one touch gold, since we decided we didn't need the gas starter, the attached table or charcoal bin. The two features I didn't realize we were losing from the 10-year old kettle we're replacing are the the cradle-bracket that holds the top when you take off the cover, and the thermometer which was part of the cover. I'm a little upset that we spent what we did, to have those features NOT INCLUDED. Will be returning it for the Performer, I guess, but we're not happy campers. I hate to support a company that makes you pay an ultra-premium price in a newer model just to have the features that you've always had.

Well-made, sturdy grill...a snap to assemble. I'm glad I bought this pre-seasoned one. It is large enough to grill 7-8 burgers or 3-4 steaks. You will want to buy a cover if you intend to leave it outside. You may carry it from inside to out each time, but, being cast iron, it is heavy for it's size. Unlike any other charcoal grills I have owned, this one should last a lifetime if it is not allowed to rust. Amazon delivery was prompt as always.

I purchased this grill as it's small enough for my needs and I love cast iron. I haven't been able to use it till last week, so I used it twice and cleaned it out. To my surprise I see a crack on the fire bowl where the left side of the fire door sits. I couldn't believe it. Last week the 30 days expired so I cannot return it to Amazon so I have to see what I can do now. It cooks great and doesn't use much charcoal. I am so disappointed.

The last time I had a grill this good was the original cast iron Hibachi from the 1970s. While there are only 2 height settings the temperature control is very good using the doors to control air flow. The cast iron grill is obviously the best for non-stick easy to clean, great heat transfer cooking. The only thing I can think to improve is the grease control.

I used this BBQ and one of those sunbeams side by side to cook for a cub scout pack. The other grill could fit one more hamburger but in the end, this grill made more hamburgers and they were cooked better. I've used it on delicate meats to fishes. Wonderful product.

 "Gambled and won!" 2009-07-29
By Larry G. Crowder (Mobile, AL)
OK, what gives with this 'gambled and won' header. Buying a Weber is not a gamble and the excellent reviews prove this and I will elaborate more on this later. The gamble is ordering an item that weighs 185 pounds and wondering just how damaged it will be when it arrives. I would imagine that everyone reading this review has had some type of shipping damages on large items they have purchases on the web.

The grill was shipped to me out of Tukwila, WA by a freight company called CEVA to New Orleans, LA and then was hot shot to me in Mobile, AL by Landis Transport. The box had one very small tear on the bottom surface. I cannot brag enough on these two shipping companies for a job well done. They get five stars!

Now for the grill assembly:

* Well packaged: everything wrapped, padded and well protected

* Assembly instructions very clear; anyone who can understand picture oriented instructions should be able to put this grill together.

* Part of the assembly needs two people and could take about 3 hours.

* Components are all top grade material, and lots of stainless steel.

* Parts fit together just as they are supposed to. No ill fitting pieces or 'forced' together components on this grill.

* Accurate gas tank monitor that is easy to use and easy to see.

* Easy to light burners and ones that will stay lit even in windy conditions.

* Easy to clean porcelain and stainless steel surfaces

* And the shipping box is large enough to turn into a fort for a 4-year old Grandson!

Now for the cooking review:

* Makes a mediocre outdoor cook like me look like they know what they are doing!

* The very high cooking temperature and design of the burners and grates turns the drippings to smoke, but does not flare up. This really adds to the flavor of the meats.

* Takes a lot of faith in the Weber to follow cooking suggestions because most grills you have probably used get a lot of flare up with high temperatures and then you have meat, especially hamburgers, that look like lumps of charcoal. Follow cooking directions - when it calls for HIGH DIRECT cooking, it means exactly that. Burners on HIGH, meat right on top of the burner and don't mess with the goods until it is time, which is not very long - Amazing results.

* I have cooked steaks, hamburgers, chicken, ham steak, hot dogs using the directions. It is amazing how this very high heat seals in the juices, but does not burn the meat if you remove it in time. For instance, I pre-heat the grill to about 450F then put 1" thick steaks directly over the burner for 4 minutes on each side. They are just right for me (medium) with a flavor that is better than any of my old grills can achieve.

Miscellaneous Comments:

* Does it use more gas (I use propane) because of its high cooking temperature than other grills? Personally, I do not think it does because the cooking times are much shorter.

* The burner controls take up most of the right table extension instead of mounted on front like other brands. This has not been a problem for me because I have table tops close by for a work surface. I do not know the reason for this, but it may have something to do with getting the controls as far away from the burners as possible. It gets really warm on the front of the grill when it is preheated to 400-500F.

* I have a concrete patio and the wheels work just fine. The two in front are lockable and I have found the grill easy to move in spite of its weight.

* The drip pan is easy to change, but seldom needs it because most everything that drips turns to smoke. In fact, after several months of regular use, I have very little in the pan.

Overall rating - of course it gets five stars!

"Nice Grill - Lots of Assembly & Watch Pricing" 2009-07-24
By BnE (Los Angeles, CA USA)
We have had the grill for about a month and are enjoying it this summer. Seems solid, well made and we recommend it. Just a couple of things to note:

1) It came in a huge 175 lb. box completely unassembled. So plan on spending an afternoon putting it together with another person. Instructions were very good and no parts were missing so, other than the initial shock of a big assembly project, all went well.

2) After I ordered the grill but before I received it, Amazon dropped the price by $100 to $599!! I called Amazon and they would not honor the new price which really annoyed me. Also, I could not cancel the order because it was already in transit and they said I would have to pay the shipping to return (which is a lot at 175 lbs). Be very careful with Amazon's pricing practices.

 "Superior Grill" 2009-07-22
By R. McCauley (Atlanta, Georgia)
I have owned this grill for almost a month, and have cooked on it almost every dinner. It heats up quickly, cooks food evenly, and food releases easily. I read a lot of reviews (2 months of searching), and I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

"All I expected, and more" 2009-07-18
By J. Wellman (St. Louis)
I researched grills, the Weber, was always rated at the top, Amazon had the best price, shipped free, and it delivered 4 days early, on a Friday.

Had it cooking the same night, easy assembly, great taste. All I expected, only time will tell on longevity, but its put together with heavt duty materials. I also got a cover, and expect years of service, if my wife will let me at it, she loves it also.....

"This grill hasn't done me wrong, 2nd year and still a honeymoon every day" 2009-07-17
By C. Potgeter
The kitchen in my home is for ....stuff.

Stuff for making tea, stir-fry, pizza, lasagna, rum doughnuts, blender drinks, jello shots, etc.

I have never cooked meat indoors (With the exception of chili, and crock pot fare.).

I have used the grill far more than my stove and oven combined.

Whether it's rib-eyes, pork chops, pork ribs, chicken breasts, or whole chickens, this grill has never done me wrong.

I have owned mostly cheap grills, but I wanted something....better. I assembled it outside on my 2nd floor deck. (No idea how I'm gonna move it.)

It has fired up every time, sun, rain, or snow. Yes, I grill in the rain and snow.

It has never blown out during windy days-there are some strong cross winds, and no shelter or windbreak.

It hits over 700F for 15 minutes once a month burning the grease off-no paint damage.

But the proof is in the eating, and if my deck falls and the grill is damaged beyond repair-I will get the exact same grill.

I have never had a steak or ANY cut of meat at ANY restaurant that is as good as on my Weber. Day in and day out. I also have never had any cut of meat prepared on my Weber that didn't live up to expectations. It's perfect-every time.

My neighbor comes over once a week and brings meat and drinks but the condition is that we grill it on this weber.

He told me how much he loves this grill, and I told him to buy one-they still make it.

His answer-"No- I want THIS one."

Sorry. This one's mine.

I agree with the poor assembly instructions, me and my neighbor assembled it in the dark holding a flashlight in the rain. We had to take stuff apart a couple of times before it was together the right way. That's no reason to take off a star-think of it as a challenge.
