 "Great Condo Grill" 2009-10-26
By Glenn
This grill is ideal for a condo or apt where you cannot have a gas grill. I am quite pleased with the heat it develops and the ability to seer a steak, chops, etc. The time it takes is not as long as i thought (10 min), and quickly goes to 6oo-700 degrees on the gauge. I would also suggest the stainless grill as it adds to the whole grilling out thing - much like the big gas stainless grills. The one issue I have, was when I tried to put the self tapping screws into the brackets that form a lip for the top to sit on the base. I still have to correct this as the screws are way to big and nothing wants to line up. This needs to be addressed by Char-Broil. Otherwise, the grill works great.

 "Char-Broil Electric Patio Grill" 2009-09-02
By Jerry S. Johnson
The subject grill is convenient, easy to use, easy to clean, saves space and provides excellent temperature controls for cooking steaks, chicken and anything else outside while ensuring that it is cooked exactly as you like it. It is soooo better than gas or charcol grills. I rate it 4-stars only because it is annoying to assemble. Nothing technically difficult, but the top of the cooker contains an internal dome-shaped heat shield that is partially held in place by three small metal braces that are attached to the top of the cooker using self-dyeing screws. At least ones of the screws did not attach itself properly. It is a design flaw that could have and should have been changed by the manufacturer. The product represents great value for the miniscule costs involved.

"Charbroil Stainless Patio Caddie will rust" 2009-10-23

If you're buying the Stainless Steel Patio Caddie because you think it is a more durable finish than the porcelain finish; it's not. The steel finish will rust.

 "Char-Broil Patio Grill" 2009-04-04
By Capt. Mike (The Atlantic, S/V Destiny II)
I just received my grill this week and have not put it together yet. My first choice grill is no longer available so I bought the Char-broil. OH My... Char-Broil should be ashamed. I am sure the cost to make this grill in CHINA (whoops) is less than $40.00. Cheap, cheap... cheap! Stamped poor quality stainless steel with sharp edges. If I had seen one in a store I can tell you I wouldn't have purchased it. The Retail price on the Stainless Steel unit is $249.00. I don't think there's a part on the grill that's made in the USA. Hey, I thought Char-Broil was a good'ol Georgia Company? We have a Magma gas kettle grill on the boat that costs close to the same (retail) price. The Magma quality makes the Char-Broil Patio unit look very bad. I wish Magma or Webber would make a home unit to compete! If it's your only choice buy it but beware.

 "Char-Broil Stanless Steel Gas Grill " 2009-01-30
By College-Grad (Colorado)
I purchased this as a replacement for the Thermas Fire & Ice Grill. I had read the reviews that the new Char-Broil Patio Caddie was of inferrior quality since it was now being manufactured in China. Personally I think China makes everything to the specfications of the Manufacturer, so the fault would be on Char-Broil for skimping on production quality.

I viewed the non Stainless Steel Gas/Electric display models at Home Depot, and would agree, that the quality is not what I would expect for the price. I decided to order the Stainless Steel off of Amazon.

At the time Char Broil was only making the Gas Version in Stainless Steel. I have since seen they are also making the Electric Version

Admittedly the cost is more for the Stainless Steel version then the painted counterpart, but in my opinion if you are needing a small patio grill, it is well worth the extra money

I would suggest you commit yourself prior to ordering the cooker, since it is not something that you simply buy and return to Walmart if you are not happy with it. It will take a good hour of assembly, and once used, is not something you are likely to disasemble, and repackage, and ship back to Amazon for shipping cost of $25.

I highly recommend that you purchase the Manchester 11 lb mini propaine tank. It fits perfectly, and costs $11 to fill at your local Equiptment Rental Place. I found out after purchasing the Grill, that the Propaine Tanks at Home Depot and Lowes cost $49 for the 20lb swap out cylinders, and then $19 to exchange it for a full tank. The 20 lb tank makes it extremely heavy to sit under the grill, and it is unlikely you will use 4 gallions of propaine in one year. The smaller tank is just the right size if you want to carry your gril into your garage for winter storage.

Overall I was very impressed with quality of the Grill. My only complaint is that Char-broil needs to include spacers or washers to fit between the kettle, and the legs so that the screws can be tightned down without flattening out the leg that it attaches to. The book says that the bolts must be finger tight only. That is because the leg that attaches to the kettle is about 1/4" away from the leg. If you tighen it down, the bends in the leg piece will flatten out. I went down and bought a package of 30 #8 3/4" washers, and put 5 of them between the leg and the kettle. In this way I was able to tighen down the legs securely, without damaging the leg.

My only other confusion was that the book shows the handle being placed on the side of the grill, and the pictures show it on the front. After assembling it, I moved the handle to the front, since that made more sense when I was moving the grill. It is important to know this when you are assembling the unit, since the base has to be attached so that the wheels are directly across from the handle.

I feel that there has to be a better cover for this unit, one preferably made of a cloth material and not vinyl. $14 seems a little steep for something that will probably only last 1 year if left out in the hot and cold. But it is necessary to hold on the Grill Top, if you leave the Grill outside. There is nothing that anchors the lid onto the cooker, so if you have a wind storm come up, you can count on a nice dent in your cooker top. I ended up buying 2 bungie cords to wrap around the Cover to keep it from also blowng away, and then a 5' bicycle cable to to around the cooker and attach it to my deck, to also keep it from blowing away.

With the propaine tank in place, it is likely that the cooker won't move, but with a grill this small and upright, it would take just one good gust of wind to knock it over, and put a nice dent in your cooker.

The other complaint is the grease. It only has two small holes in the bottom for all the grease to drip into the bottom and finaly make it's way into the cup. I would pay extra money if Char-Broil would have offered a disposable Aluminum pan that would sit in the bottom of the grill, and let all of the grease run over it, then throw it away at the end of cooking season. I know that it is going to be a real pain to clean the grill when all of the grease just drips into the bottom of the cooker.

Overall I am satisfied with the way that it cooks, and the quality of the cooker. But to state an overused phrase. "it is what it is" meaning, that if you need a small patio grill, this is a very good one. But if you can manage a larger size grill on your patio, then do not buy the kettle grill. There is just alot of problems without the lid being hinged to the grill, and it is a waste of money if it is just going to be damaged in a wind storm if the grill lid blows off, or it blows over.

 "Good while it lasted" 2009-10-05
By Michele Neary
I am disposing of this grill after the second extension cord/controller meltdown in two years. Enjoyed the grill while it lasted, but replacement parts are expensive and Char Broil customer service is not very helpful. Here is their latest advice, when the new extension cord melted after just two months of use: "Thank you for contacting the grill service center. I apologize for the damage to your extension cord. The reason this part normally overheats is because of the heating element inside the grill. As this element starts to go out, it will actually overheat and cause the connection of the extension cord to melt. We advise that any time you replace your extension cord, you also would want to replace the heating element."

First I've heard about that. Why would I pay almost as much as a new gas grill to replace the parts on this electric model which is clearly defective? We also had to replace the enamel grill when it started flaking apart into our food after one month of use.

We had one given to us as a wedding present 9 1/2 years ago and have utilized it immensely through all the seasons. We were devastated when the heating element finally went out. We HAD to have another one for the amount of use and the small size it is for our condo balcony. It's a great product!!

 "Very disappointed" 2009-08-26
By Maine-iac (Maine, United States)
I purchased my first char-broil patio grill and was thrilled with it. No more dragging propane tanks or waiting for charcoal to be ready (PS -- I do love charcoal for it's taste, and sometimes use it when I have time so I'm not dissing the charcoal :-D ). I used this grill for one summer and bought my daughter one for Christmas as she liked it as well. I bought a third one for our summer cottage. About a year after getting them, two of them burned out within days of each other. The electric plug in is like the old fashioned electric frying pan plug, but unfortunately, has many plastic parts. When it burns out, it "swells" the plastic parts on both the plug-in and the grill unit and they no longer work. It did seem odd that two of them burned out within days of each other. If just one had burned out, I'd have thot maybe I just got a lemon, but since two burned out in close proximity to each other, it sees as though Char-broil has a defective product, or, just a grill meant to burn out shortly after the warranty is up. Hmm-mm-mm, makes one wonder. I called Char-broil, and they were totally disinterested in helping me. I also own another char-broil product and reminded them that I have 4 of their products, but to no avail. I did not get the customer service I expected, so I will not longer purchase Char-broil products. I'd beware of putting my hard earned cash into any Char-broil products. I think I'll buy a Weber next time. I've had good luck with them. If this thing had not burned out, it would have been a great grill. Alas . . .

 "Best B-B-Q I have owned" 2009-08-23
By D. Newray (San Francisco, CA)
I live in an apt that faces the direct sun all day long.....when someone's propane tank blew up from the heat, I thought I'd better get an electic b-b-q. You never have to worry about propane or lighter fluid with this. It doesn't make a lot of noise and it really doesn't smoke much when grilling. One night on the way home from a club with my friend, we were both starving for b-b-q, I pluged it in at 4am and had b-b-q chicken and veggies. My friend could not believe I had an electric grill and that it cooked so easily. It easy to clean up too!

"Total Waste Of My Money" 2009-08-06
By Neal Stevens (Greensboro, NC)
When new, this grill did not get hot enough to sear the juices into the meat, which is what a good grill will do. Also, there was very little smoke flavor imparted to the meat. It was like grilling in the kitchen stove.

The heating element failed after one season, so I invested in a new controller. The new unit worked once, and then failed completely. I have had cheaper electric grills that worked much better and lasted much longer.

I do not recommend.

 "Best grill for money" 2009-07-29
By Maryann Ramsey (Toledo, OH USA)
This is our third Patio Caddie grill. The other two we gave to our sons and they are still using them. They seem to last forever. They are the easiest to clean. I just spray a grease cutter inside and wipe out. We use it all winter long.

"nice size grill, but paint issues" 2009-07-28
By J. Lampson
I was excited to find a grill that was not huge and you could easily wheel around. When I lit it for the first time to make sure it worked and after about ten minutes of heating up, it started making a popping noise. I noticed that the paint was starting to chip off in places. This occurred both outside and inside the grill in several spots. I am not sure if it was just this unit that had the defective paint or not, but I decided to return it and not try another model like this.

 "Damaged in Shipping" 2009-07-17
By Kelly L. Johnson
Everything was fine with the grill except the lid had a quarter-sized piece of enamel missing during shipping. Charbroil said they would not replace the lid because it didn't affect the grilling. I sent them a photo indicating the damage to the lid and they decided it would be covered under warranty. It's been two weeks and I have not received the new lid. I called Charbroil and am getting the runaround...hopefully the cover will be shipped soon. Otherwise, it's a very nice looking grill for a small patio.

 "Best Grill ever" 2009-07-12
By Peggy Sue (Williamsburg, VA United States)
I think I bought mine 10 years ago. I have replaced the guts twice; had my husband weld a copper pot bottom on it to replace the bottom when it got week from use; I just cleaned it this week with oven cleaner and replaced the briquettes; I have had to tell my son who lives nearby that "No" he can't have my grill; I am going to order another set of guts and a new plastic cover today. The size is just right for a small deck-super easy to clean. If I get another grill, it will be another one of these and maybe my son can have this one! I have transported it to other locations and it is easy to carry and move since it is not so big. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!

 "Going Strong" 2009-07-10
By Darrell J. Putnam (Los Gatos, CA)
Best most convenient LP grill I've ever had - bought it 6 years ago, dragged it across the country twice. It's seen blistering heat, snow and monsoon-like rains and it's still going strong. Was easy to put together - no maintenance required - great for small and large gatherings. Will buy a new one next spring only because replacing the parts is probably more expensive.
