"Extremely well-built, verstile grill that takes outdoor/camping stoves to the next level" 2009-06-04
By Larry Diamond (Austin, TX USA)
My wife and I tent camp at least a few times a year. And we always have our trusty two propane-burner camp stove along for the trip. It works great for boiling and for pan cooking, and it will probably still have a place on our trips.

The safari chef grill adds a lot of verstility to the old camp stove. It is extremely well-built, you can see it will last for awhile and it is well-designed, and very clever. It sits on three legs and you get one burner. In the 'base' mode you use it as a kettle boiler or for pot cooking. In the 'bbq' mode you get some very good bbq grilling.

It also comes with a 2-sided teflon cooking surface that lets you grill on one side and griddle on the other. We had good results using all of the different cooking techniques. However we did get uneven heat even though it has heat deflecting. Finally there is a cover/wok pan. The cover you can use in bbq mode and it worked quite well. We cooked some delicious chicken.

It is easy to flip between modes and set up any mode you want. For the most part it is easy to clean except the metal bbq grid does not get all the way clean after its first use. All of the different pieces fit easily in the included carrying case.

The one star downgrade is because you have to put handles on the wok and it is extremely hard to do. Forget it if you are an average guy. Need really small hands. They easily could have put these on at the factory. Also downgraded because you have one burner instead of the standard 2 on most camp stoves. Thus it will probably compliment rather than replace camp stoves for most people especially families.

This is a really nice product for campers, tailgaters, or picnicers. It does not have a huge surface but should be ok for a family of 4 or so. Recommended.

"Cooks like a much larger grill!" 2009-04-19
By Safari John (New Jersey)
I bought this grill for use on a boat after some pretty extensive research. I've finally tried it out for the first time, grilling some hamburgers and hot links. What a pleasant surprise! The grill cooks as it's supposed to. Both burgers and links came out perfect. While there appears to be a slight warmer spot in the middle, it doesn't appear to affect cooking much; there was less heat variation than on my large backyard grill. I think the two layers of metal/air between the flame and food is what really helps create a good heat distribution.

Construction is excellent, and everything is very well thought out. Compared to some of the Coleman and other brands I've looked at in person at retail stores, this one really stands out. The only thing I wish is that they would have a stainless steel version.

I would highly recommend this product.

One word of advice: don't wrap the heat distribution plate in aluminum foil. I did because I wanted to save on the cleaning step (which I didn't anyway) and some of the aluminum foil melted and stuck to some parts of the grill. Apparently, some of the surfaces get pretty hot!

 "Great grill!" 2008-08-18
By nuni (New York)
This is a fantastic product. Each attachment is well designed and extremely useful, especially the lid which doubles as a pan. I used my grill for the first time today and it was a jiffy to set up. The heat was strong and even and afterwards, the whole thing folds up conveniently into a portable carrying case. Perfect if you don't have a lot of storage space. All the parts felt sturdy and well-made. Definitely a quality grill.

 "Awesome " 2009-01-17
By John Sorrick (Kansas City, Ks)
I have had this product for over 2 years now and I love it. I have read other response about how difficult it is to clean. You are talking about a massive grill that sits in your yard get some degreaser and blast it with your hose. cleans up great. I have no problems with this grill. It is a must have for the true BBQue enthusiast. I use my for BBQ comp, I am able to have a fire on one side and cook passively. I took the charcoal grate out because of how close it keeps the coals, if you remove that one and put in a 22" grate for a standard weber and put it in the bottom it will keep your coals at a better distance and it is big enough so the 3 vents on the bottom can still breath. Love the lid design and the holder system that is made for it. I would recommend this product to anyone.

 "A little disappointed" 2008-12-16
By Snoopy
It was packaged in such a way to almost guarantee the dent in the lid caused by a charcoal vent. There's no one-touch cleaning, making the three vents inadequate for cleaning. There's no place for a thermometer (like the performer series). Grill has no handles. I would expect a little more in the way of features at that price! Its pretty darned expensive for what it is.

If you're buying a weber charcoal chimney, the large one does NOT hold the correct amount of charcoal, you need two small ones (which is even better for indirect heating). At least that's the case if you follow their guidelines for briquette counting.

Shipping was through a freight company (that I had never heard of), and delivery is NOT guaranteed by the date Amazon gave me - unless you happen to be home when they call to set up an appointment. I called them by 10 AM and it was too late to set up an appointment for that day.

But, other than the above, the grill is HUGE, nothing like it for a large gathering!

If you are a true charcoal kind of guy/gal, you owe it to yourself to get this grill. Go ahead, reward yourself. You'll finally have the landscape to cook everything simultaneously for that great tasting meal you've grown accustomed to (sorry gas users). I take pride in grilling, and like you, I'm often disappointed in paying top dollar for a meal that I could have done better (if I was home grilling). This Weber does not disappoint. Yes, it's big but that's the beauty and convenience of it. Trust me, after your first grilling session; you will not know how you ever grilled on a 22" kettle. Enjoy my fellow charcoal lovers, enjoy!

 "Whatta grill!" 2004-06-04

I was in the hardware store today and I saw the regular Weber 22 inch kettle. How did I ever cook anything on that tiny little thing? This grill's huge cooking space gives you plenty of room for indirect cooking. It's impossible to sear steaks then move them off the heat in a small grill unless you're doing one or two. With this one, you've got acres of space -- my culinary success rate went way up with this one.

There is a similar model out there called the Whalen King Kettle. It has virtually the same cooking space but takes a smaller bite out of your wallet. Anyone know anything about it? Happy grilling...

"Best giant Charcoal grill I've seen" 2003-06-20
By
I have a family of 7 with a few extra around a lot of the time. Grilling used to be a step by step process which usually meant I ate after everyone else because I was still cooking when most were eating. We like to do meat and vegetables on the grill and with this grill I can do it all at once and sit down with the family and enjoy! You can build your fire off center and spin the grate to move one item off and another item over the flame. You can also build small fires on two sides and put meat in the middle and smoke anything. Easy to control vents allow you to regulate the heat and burn time of the coals. Also it doesn't use a bag of cahrcoal at a time as you might think. You can use one Weber Chimney Starter (which I also recommend)full to cook most items. The grate is TOP quality. I used to go through a grate a year on my old Weber Kettle. This grate is beefy and I think must be finished better. No rust at all after two years. The only thing that keeps me from rating this 5 stars is dealing with ashes. You have to remove both grates (and the cooking grate is a handful)and shovel ashes out. The bottom has three vents that are not made for ash removal. At least you can cook a ton before ashes become a problem. It is expensive and a load but I would do it again in a heartbeat if a tornado came and blew it away. That is about the only thing I can think of that would keep this thing from lasting for 20 years or more.

 "Does the job" 2009-07-10
By S. Martin
Cold smoker is a Bradley attachment that takes the place of cardboard boxes and many other configurations set up by Bradley Smoker users. Box is made from heavy steel and has convenient door for water tray. Connects well without much leaking to generator and cabinet. Included is a resistor that allows the generator to be disconnected from the cabinet when using the digital model. The hose (duct) could be a bit heavier. It is pretty fragile but does bend without any problem. You just need to be careful while bending or you'll kink it. Does not appear to be standard dryer vent hose. It's about 1/4" bigger to accommodate the end plates. I would give it five stars with a better duct.

Unfortunately, due to lack of system considerations,

the Cold Smoke Adapter as it is now, is not an acceptable product yet.

In order to set up the system workable,

we have to personally take troubles to

add a longer power line cord set and a platform to place the main tower or oven to match the heights. Further the aluminum duct provided is not

strong enough to bend or turn 90 degrees.

 "Great Grill For Camping" 2009-08-02
By R. Arters (Lancaster, PA)
I bought this campfire grill because my wife and I like to tent camp. We always have a campfire. So we decided to try to use fire to cook our meals rather than tote a propane grill along. We used this grill to cook omlet in cast iron skillet and it held skillet nice and level. We also cooked a steak dinner and baked potatoes over the fire. It worked out great! THis grill is nicley constructed (in the USA!). The grill has a nice edge or rim to it so that food does not roll off of grill into the fire. It has a heavy, two-piece (with heavy threaded connection)mounting rod and has a heavy bolt that allows grill to be positioned anywhere up and down the mounting rod to adjust height of cooking over fire. The grill comes with a oven mit, a hot pad and all fits in a carry bag.

By Capt. Mike (The Atlantic, S/V Destiny II)
I just received my grill this week and have not put it together yet. My first choice grill is no longer available so I bought the Char-broil. OH My... Char-Broil should be ashamed. I am sure the cost to make this grill in CHINA (whoops) is less than $40.00. Cheap, cheap... cheap! Stamped poor quality stainless steel with sharp edges. If I had seen one in a store I can tell you I wouldn't have purchased it. The Retail price on the Stainless Steel unit is $249.00. I don't think there's a part on the grill that's made in the USA. Hey, I thought Char-Broil was a good'ol Georgia Company? We have a Magma gas kettle grill on the boat that costs close to the same (retail) price. The Magma quality makes the Char-Broil Patio unit look very bad. I wish Magma or Webber would make a home unit to compete! If it's your only choice buy it but beware.

 "Char-Broil Stanless Steel Gas Grill " 2009-01-30
By College-Grad (Colorado)
I purchased this as a replacement for the Thermas Fire & Ice Grill. I had read the reviews that the new Char-Broil Patio Caddie was of inferrior quality since it was now being manufactured in China. Personally I think China makes everything to the specfications of the Manufacturer, so the fault would be on Char-Broil for skimping on production quality.

I viewed the non Stainless Steel Gas/Electric display models at Home Depot, and would agree, that the quality is not what I would expect for the price. I decided to order the Stainless Steel off of Amazon.

At the time Char Broil was only making the Gas Version in Stainless Steel. I have since seen they are also making the Electric Version

Admittedly the cost is more for the Stainless Steel version then the painted counterpart, but in my opinion if you are needing a small patio grill, it is well worth the extra money

I would suggest you commit yourself prior to ordering the cooker, since it is not something that you simply buy and return to Walmart if you are not happy with it. It will take a good hour of assembly, and once used, is not something you are likely to disasemble, and repackage, and ship back to Amazon for shipping cost of $25.

I highly recommend that you purchase the Manchester 11 lb mini propaine tank. It fits perfectly, and costs $11 to fill at your local Equiptment Rental Place. I found out after purchasing the Grill, that the Propaine Tanks at Home Depot and Lowes cost $49 for the 20lb swap out cylinders, and then $19 to exchange it for a full tank. The 20 lb tank makes it extremely heavy to sit under the grill, and it is unlikely you will use 4 gallions of propaine in one year. The smaller tank is just the right size if you want to carry your gril into your garage for winter storage.

Overall I was very impressed with quality of the Grill. My only complaint is that Char-broil needs to include spacers or washers to fit between the kettle, and the legs so that the screws can be tightned down without flattening out the leg that it attaches to. The book says that the bolts must be finger tight only. That is because the leg that attaches to the kettle is about 1/4" away from the leg. If you tighen it down, the bends in the leg piece will flatten out. I went down and bought a package of 30 #8 3/4" washers, and put 5 of them between the leg and the kettle. In this way I was able to tighen down the legs securely, without damaging the leg.

My only other confusion was that the book shows the handle being placed on the side of the grill, and the pictures show it on the front. After assembling it, I moved the handle to the front, since that made more sense when I was moving the grill. It is important to know this when you are assembling the unit, since the base has to be attached so that the wheels are directly across from the handle.

I feel that there has to be a better cover for this unit, one preferably made of a cloth material and not vinyl. $14 seems a little steep for something that will probably only last 1 year if left out in the hot and cold. But it is necessary to hold on the Grill Top, if you leave the Grill outside. There is nothing that anchors the lid onto the cooker, so if you have a wind storm come up, you can count on a nice dent in your cooker top. I ended up buying 2 bungie cords to wrap around the Cover to keep it from also blowng away, and then a 5' bicycle cable to to around the cooker and attach it to my deck, to also keep it from blowing away.

With the propaine tank in place, it is likely that the cooker won't move, but with a grill this small and upright, it would take just one good gust of wind to knock it over, and put a nice dent in your cooker.

The other complaint is the grease. It only has two small holes in the bottom for all the grease to drip into the bottom and finaly make it's way into the cup. I would pay extra money if Char-Broil would have offered a disposable Aluminum pan that would sit in the bottom of the grill, and let all of the grease run over it, then throw it away at the end of cooking season. I know that it is going to be a real pain to clean the grill when all of the grease just drips into the bottom of the cooker.

Overall I am satisfied with the way that it cooks, and the quality of the cooker. But to state an overused phrase. "it is what it is" meaning, that if you need a small patio grill, this is a very good one. But if you can manage a larger size grill on your patio, then do not buy the kettle grill. There is just alot of problems without the lid being hinged to the grill, and it is a waste of money if it is just going to be damaged in a wind storm if the grill lid blows off, or it blows over.

 "Worth the money, considering." 2009-11-19
By Dazzle Me
We used it when my in-laws came in. The granite (for warming foods) is beautiful and likely expensive which is probably why the engineer/designer went cheap with the metal top that actually grills the meat.

The metal grilling portion is very thin/light. When we began cooking the thinly sliced steak and salmon, we brought it right out from the fridge. With the rapid change in temperature, the top did begin to ((warp/bend)). However, when it cooled off, it went right back to normal. Was slightly disturbed when it happened because it was a pretty drastic change in shape. The heat this racelette grill gives off is perfect and certainly hot enough to cook the foods we prepared.

If you do not mind spending more money for this size then go get the Swissmar but we only use it during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Overall, worth the money.

Amazon did a nice job with packaging! With quick shipping as well!

Raclette is an efficient and fun way to prepare simple but hearty food right at the table. It's a popular French method of cooking that you can bring right into your home. A variety of cheeses, crusty bread and a bottle of wine...you're set for some dining enjoyment. Add some veggies on top of the grill, it's great fun. With eight trays, one per person, everybody can join in. Place some bite size pieces of cheese, place under the grill and let it soften and melt and it's ready to place on a piece of bread to enjoy.

Try it, you'll like it.

 "VERY Disapointed" 2009-02-26
By cbj3 (TN)
This item doesn't even diserve a one star. I've used other raclettes before at friends houses, and decided to buy one myself. Big mistake, I was excited to finally have one of my own and invited my friends over. My friends are from Germany and France and the Raclette is a big item for them there. We turned it on, it heated real nice at first, then the top slowly warped (kinda like when you put a cold cookie sheet in the oven and warps) until the food wouldn't cook much less stay on the grill top. I decided to try to cook an egg on the flat side and the top tipped over and raw egg went everywhere. First I thought that maybe I didn't have it sitting on the metal prongs properly and tried readjusting it 3 times, but when it's warped it doesn't matter. And after a while we could hardly get the cheese to melt. When we turned it off it slowly started to flatten out, but not completely.

I recommend you purchase a better quality grill.

This is exactly the raclette what we were looking for! The size of the grill and also the pans is perfect. We haven't used the stone plate yet but to have it as an option is awesome. I highly recommend this grill!

The delivery was fast too.

Thank you very much!

Belinda
