 "Issue solved" 2009-07-01
By Paul L. Marcuzzo (Punta Gorda, FL)
I am very interested in this grill and was concerned about a previous review on water intrusion into the grease catcher. I emailed tech support on Sunday evening and early Monday morning I had a very thorough response from their tech support group This issue is solved and if you buy a unit now or have one, contact support with your model and serial number and they will send you a piece to solve this issue.

I was impressed with their quick response and offer to solve the problem. My next grill will be the S-670!

 "Excellent for large groups" 2009-04-17
By C. Saxon
This is the newer model S670 #2780301. The previous model was 2780001 so check the number before ordering. I was planning on the smaller s470 but Northline express had a sale on the s670 for about the same price, so I jumped on it. It arrived by freight (free shipping) and the driver rolled it into my garage by himself with a special dolly. Plan on 2 or more people to help move it. My son and I moved it about 5 feet at a time working towards my backyard.

It came well packaged and completely assembled except for the 2 side wings. A few screws and you're done. They recommend a 20# propane tank but I'm looking for 30-40# because if you use all the burners the propane disappears fast, so have a spare ready. I thought the gimmicky knob and grill lights would be useless, but now I find them very helpful at dusk and night. They're useful gimmicks! The hide away rotisserie motor is another nice touch. It frees up shelf space when not in use and you don't have to attach and unattach it when needed. You just pull a tab and there it is ready to use.

I don't want to drag this out but I've used all of the grills functions and the results are excellent. It's expensive but worth it. I would assume the s470 is just as good for less. Look for overstock and other sales. I think I got a great deal. Good luck!

Oh! There's a newer cover for it also 7555 with side vents instead of the front and rear vents that leaked water into the grease tray.

 "Great Grill!" 2009-08-29
By Randall G. (Southern California)
Purchased this propane grill to replace a 3 year old non-Weber grill that stated needing an overhaul. I am very impressed with every aspect of this grill. Very well engineered by the Weber folks in suburban Chicago. Assembly was fine -- no words; just pictures which was OK. Looks fantastic and heated up to 500 degrees in less than 15 minutes. That's plenty hot enough for me. At this point,I have no suggestions for the Weber folks. Buying through Amazon made it easy for me with the free shipping through Amazon Prime. It was a very large box and would have been very difficult transporting from my local hardware store. Another great Amazon experience and thrilled with the Weber Product. You will not be disappoined. I got the grill cover too but have not opened it up yet.

This grill is awesome. I've had it a couple weeks now and used it about 5 or 6 times and it cooks very well. It replaced my 10 year old Ducane which was falling apart. While I was putting the grill together I was very impressed with the quality of the parts and how solidly built the grill is.

It gets very hot and can sear meat, something my old one could not do. I really like having three burners too.

I'm looking forward to many year of great grilling.

"The newest Weber at our house" 2009-05-17
By David K (Chappaqua)
I just put together the Weber 310 and it is cooking well. Our old Weber came with much better instructions & cookbook all enclosed in a 3 ring binder. The new instructions are printed on a large piece of newsprint paper and the pictures can be confusing. I needed to call Weber many times to clarify instructions. I was missing one nut and Weber substituted another type that works. When I called, they said that the missing nut is backed ordered and I would be receiving it as soon as it is available. It came about 2 weeks after I had the grill together and the nut is part of assembly instruction # 8 in instructions that run to # 22. I have not undone the work to put the correct nut in place.

The grill works great. It is a pleasure to cook with.

I got the non Weber grill cover and it fits perfectly and keeps the rain out. Apparently, the Weber brand cover allows the rain to get in.

 "Unproven, Shows Promise" 2009-07-22
By Alexander L. Gregath (Los Angeles, CA)
Relatively easy to put together.

So, I've used the grill 3 times now. Boy does it get hot, and by that I mean the whole thing. Even the work stations on either side get hot. Then again, I've been grilling in SoCal where we've had 100+ days, so that could be part of it. Nice even cooking. Side burner is nice and works efficiently. Easy to clean.

A few small qualms. There is no back for the rather nice housing for the propane tank. This does not affect performance, only aesthetics. Second, good luck finding a third-party rotisserie unit. The bracket design is quite unique, and if you want a rotisserie, you'll probably have to go through Ducane, as I'm discovering. Again, not a performance issue per se, but something that bothered me.

Customer support has been excellent. Ducane is owned by Weber so you do get that. I had a small dent in the hood upon delivery and contacted them prior to working it out myself. They offered to send a new one if I liked, but the dent came right out.

For proper burning, please make sure to keep your grill level otherwise you're screwed.

Overall, an excellent product with great customer service.

Not very thrilled about this grill. Was easy to put together, but the burner knobs don't work very well. The one to the far right won't shut off. At one point, flames were going every where when I started the grill. Not sure what I'm going to do about it yet, it's not very safe. Other than that it seems fine.

I purchased this grill to replace a grill I had used for 12 years for about the same price. this grill is much better with many more features ever though it is a basic grill . I had read a recomendation review on grill on the market and this was rated a top 10 buy. I would have to agree that it is worthy of that designation. Thre are no dealers in my area for this brand but all parts are available on the web if anything needs replacing in the future. It should easily last as long as my former grill.

 "I love this little grill !" 2009-09-22
By Sky King (Massachusetts)
Let me start by saying "I love this grill!". I used it twice last weekend, once at a Nascar event. I had none of the problems that I read in some other reviews. Following the instructions, I filled the grill compartments with charcoal ( I used Stubbs), then placed 4 briquettes in the center tray and a few small torn pieces of newspaper. Then I squirted a couple of ounces of Charcoal lighter fluid on the 4 briquettes and paper in the tray (NOT on the charcoals under the grills!!). In 10 minutes it is one hot Son Of Hibachi.

For my first test, I had read the reviews saying it wasn't hot enough, so I added about 6 pieces of charcoal to each side after opening the hot grill. It worked great, but was close to being too hot. Plus it took hours for the thing to finally cool in the pouch!!

We used it at the Nascar Race in Loudon NH on the following day. We cooked Hamburgers, Brats, and steak kabobs for four guys. No complaints, everyone thought the grill was great. When it was time to go we stuck it in the pouch, waited 15 - 20 minutes, placed it in the car, and we were off to sit in traffic.

Now for my one complaint. When i first set up the grill, I opened the Snuff Out Pouch to insert the grill, and one of the seams just came appart, obviously it was not sewn through. I contacted the company that makes the grill by multiple emails and left messages by phone. I thought maybe they could replace the bag rather than me having to return the entire grill to Amazon after using it at Nascar. After 3 days of this, I still had not received a response. So I ended up returning the entire package, and Amazon is sending me another at no charge to me (Nice job Amazon - that's why I shop here - Amazon knows how important good customer service is!). So now, rather than help a customer, the manufacturer will get a perfectly fine used grill back. Not to mention that I had to sew the stupid pouch so I could use it on Sunday!

Bottom line: Great grill, just hope you never need any kind of support. Knowing that, I liked it enough to re-order another one.

10-19-2009

UPDATE !!!!!! I think it's only fair that I update this review. About 10 days after I first contacted the manufacturer of the grill and pouch, 4 days after receiving the new grill and pouch from Amazon, I came home from work to find a package on my doorstep that contained a new Snuff-out pouch. So....like the first pouch, I am torn (sorry). As it turns out, they heard my plea for help and sent me a new bag (nice job), but if they had replied to my email or called me on my cell phone (which I had provided in every one of my emails and voicemails)to let me know they were going to send the new bag, it would have saved me a lot of trouble! So, the manifacturer does provide decent customer service, just a bit confused.

One last thing - on the new grill, the small plastic handle on the center tray cracked on first use. I applied a little epoxy, and all is fine. Main point - I LOVE THIS LITTLE GRILL !!!!!

"Great grill with a few caveats" 2008-09-22
By Wayne Bengston (Cordelia, CA)
I bought this grill three months ago and have loved it. My family and friends love the food I make on it as well. I have cooked on it about fifteen times and have not had one disaster or complete failure to cook good food with it.

That said, there was a learning curve too it. I first tried using MatchLight Charcoal with it, and that resulted in three-foot tall flames coming out of it during the starting process. It also did not get hot enough to sear the food, but the results were still better than I get with a gas grill.

I then tried natural wood charcoal chunks. This was a serious mistake. The grill got hot enough, and the food was as we like it, but the popping of the charcoal resulted in me constantly having to put out hot coals that flew out of it. I did not try that charcoal again.

Next I ordered some "Wicked Good Charcoal" and that has been just what the doctor ordered. It still takes about 30 minutes to get the fire good and hot, but this charcoal gets HOT and lasts well.

I've tried a variety of starter methods. A couple of sheets of newspapaper like in a chimney starter do not get the job done. The starter sticks from Son of Hibachi do well, but you need to use several at a time for best results. I've tried some MatchLight starter sticks and they do well, but burn with a black smoke that coats the grills with soot. My favorite method is to use newspaper and a jellied alcohol type starter that I get at Whole Foods. I do find that putting enough charcoal in to force the two halves slightly apart gives more air-flow to the upper half of the grill in the starter configuration, and gives a better light to the upper half.

I've found that the grills are not entirely self cleaning, but a minute with a wire brush cleans them nicely. I use Weber's non-stick spray on the grills, and this completely eliminates sticking. If I do not spray the grills with some kind of oil spray, there is bad sticking.

Some things I've found;

Thin cuts cook best.

If you want to cook thicker cuts, sear them then raise the grill, and cover the food on the grill with foil to trap the heat and help the food cook quicker.

Some wood chips give a nice hint of smoke flavor, and covering the food helps trap the smoke against the food, giving more smoke flavor.

Char Crust dry rub seasoning works GREAT at giving a good flavor and sealing in the juices.

Use some foil to block the wind if it is windy, or the food will cook unevenly.

Spray the grils with an oil spray, preferably a high-heat spray or Weber's grill spray.

Empty the grill and clean the grills if you are not going to use it for a while, as the grills will rust.

Quality charcoal briquettes are required. Don't cheap out on the charcoal. You'll be using less than half of what you'd expect to use, since you can just top off the grill rather than throwing away the old charcoal.

If using quality charcoal that gets very hot, let the grill cool down a bit before putting it in the bag. I've melted some of the piping on the bag and the zipper in one spot from putting the grill in after only a few minutes with the lid on.

In summary, I LOVE this grill, and my friends and family love the food I cook with it. Just be aware that it may not live up to all it's claims fully. I still feel it is worth it.

"Son of Hibachi honors my ancestors and my food" 2008-07-20
By William R. Russell (Hawthorne, CA United States)
Son of Hibachi displays excellent design in every aspect. From the moment you take it out of the box, you realize that this grill was worth every penny. The unit is heavy-duty, beautifully finished, and the chimney start and snuff pouch work as advertised. The grills are pre-coated in wax to insure proper seasoning during the first chimney start.

Yes, the cooking surfaces are small, as the unit is designed to be highly portable. It can cook meat and sides for 2-3 people, or meat only for 3-5 people. If only they made a bigger one! But Son of Hibachi is perfectly suited for grilling dinner for a small family.

 "Purchase of the year" 2008-06-03
By Kristian Karlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden)
I bought this grill because it looked like it had it all, and I must say it really lived up to the expectations. Living in Sweden we have a fairly short summer that really makes you want to be out as often as you can. For me happiness lives in the ability to barbecue. Disposable grills is something that is big here, unfortunately its not very environmentally friendly or very good. So far the Son of Hibachi has been able to replace them with style.

The product description is pretty much on the money. Start-up is easy and fast, I would say the 10 minute mark can swing up and down a little depending on what coals you use. Lump coal is faster, briquettes a little slower - but if you can normally light your coals with fire starters, be it liquids or other you will have no problem here. The chimney effect of the closed up grill is noticeable and works as a charm.

When you notice the top coals are lit, peeking down from the top, you fold it open and the top handles become legs for the grill sides to rest upon. What strikes you at first is the intense heat wave created by the two surfaces - it is hot! Fortunately you can adjust the grilles in four levels to reduce some of that intense first heat.

We have tried cooking some different things now from hot dogs to chicken breasts to hamburgers and so far it has all worked out very well. The heavy duty grilles leave some nice black patterns on the cooking surface, just the way I think it should be.

The whole construction breathes sturdy, everything has that robust feel about it - all packed with coals it weighs in on about 16 pounds (7.5 kilo) which is a little heavy but knowing that nothing about this grill spells flimsy I accept that.

Another real good thing about this combo is the Snuff-out-pouch which really elevates this purchase. Once done grilling you close up the grill again and let that chimney effect clean of your grilles. Then smoking hot you put it down in your fire retardant pouch and zip it up - in litterally less than 10 seconds you are ready to go. Sure the bag heats up a little but considering the heat of the grill its nothing. The instructions state to leave it for at least 30 minutes before putting it in your trunk - an obvious protection against lawsuits. We have found this to be, in our case, unnecessary. As long as it stands up it's not going to damage anything. The bag can let out some smoke initially when packed but this settles pretty fast once oxygen depravation in the bag sets in.

My only gripe about Amazons product description is that the grill ships with a "Grill N Fry cast iron griddle for cooking eggs, pancakes, etc." which is only half true. Part of the grille has a flat surface true, but I don't see how it would be enough for a pancake an egg id probably fine. Luckily you can get a complete frying surface as an accessory if you look around online for a little bit.

All in all this is a marvelous little bbq which is well worth its pretty low price tag (in my opinion). Highly recommended for the excursion barbecuer.

EDIT: I would like to clarify one thing with the snuff-out pouch. I did actually manage to burn a backpack slightly I had crammed against the side of the pouch in my trunk. The sides of the pouch does get very hot after packing so I would avoid putting anything against it for a while. THe front and back however never gets very hot.

 "A Great Little Cooker!" 2008-12-29
By Brian Battuello (Ossining, NY, United States)
I've been using a round Weber for years, and it was finally wearing out, so I decided to try this new model. It is excellent, with strong design and construction, easy to use lid and vents, and one of the most effective grill plates I've ever encountered. I've never been a big fan of propane grills or monster-sized charcoal cook-a-ramas. This is just what I need to do perfect steaks and fish for six people.

The only drawback, which doesn't affect the unit itself, is that the Weber stand accessory is not well designed. Just plan to put this on a sturdy table.

My husband was looking for the perfect charcoal, table-top grill -- and we found it! The only design flaw is that you have to light the charcoal, then put the cooking grates on, so it can be challenging. Other than that, we are really happy with this portable grill.

 "Weber brand legacy continues" 2008-10-24
By sgunden (FL USA)
The Weber Char Q is a well designed high performance charcoal grill. The accessories available product line makes this aluminum griller a very versatile performer. Adding the stationary cart, the handle light and a full-size cover makes this an excellent replacement for your main back yard grill. The ability to remove it from the cart and use it as a mobile table top grill allows it to go anywhere you may need it.

Unfortunately Weber does not make a Table Kit for the Char Q model. This accessory is only available for the propane models. You will need a side table for tools and dishes.

Easy to empty the ashes and clean the grates. An excellent value and an excellent performer.

"Great grill, hate the clean up" 2008-08-05
By D. Corral (Chicago, IL)
I was a little unsure if this type of grill would work with charcoal, but it does. The spacing between the grill and the charcoal is a little close for my liking. You have to keep a close eye on the food so that it will not burn. The food taste great because of that charcoal flavor that a propane grill just would not give. Now the problem, it makes a mess. Cleaning the bottom of the grill is a pain. You can not clean it a 100%. It leaves a little bit of the burn charcoal at the bottom. Also, the handles are a little "weak" for the weight of the grill in my opinion. Don't get me wrong I do enjoy the grill, but I wish it didn't have the problems that it has for the price that it cost.

 "Great for Two" 2008-07-24
By S. Smith
The Weber Q serves the purpose for which I bought it. Rather than pull out the large Weber and wrestle with the cover, I now save it for company. The Weber Q is just perfect for a dinner for two. Actually, you could feed four easily. The small cover (additional) goes on quickly and easily and clean up is a breeze. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that the coals are a bit closer to the grate than I would like. I am quickly learning how to adjust my grilling to this problem. Hello indirect grilling. I would certainly buy this product again.

Who says true barbecue grilling was meant for the outdoors? The Minden Master Range Top Grill is the ultimate indoor grilling tool. The unique design allows for true open-flame cooking while keeping the mess of barbecuing within the grill. The Range Top Grill uses the same heavy-duty grate design, enameled steel firebox and cover as the Minden Master Grill. the grill is round in diameter and works on any standard, raised electric, gas or propane stove. The grill offers a round opening on the bottom that allows for the grill to sit over the burner to produce heat. The added heat shield helps to evenly cook the food and deflect grease that drops into a trough to prevent flair backs. As the fat drips off the meat it hits the shield and helps to evenly cook the food. The silicon handles are removable allowing the grill to be cleaned in any dishwasher or self-cleaning oven for a low maintenance approach to everyday cooking. Since the Range Top Grill mimics the performance of a real BBQ range, it is recommended it be used on a range with adequate ventilation.

"FINALLY A GREAT INDOOR GRILL" 2009-09-25
By dkp
I purchased a Thermador range and the hood for a grill. I was talked out of the grill function on the stove (which I regretted) but still had this powerful hood. I live in San Francisco and the weather doesn't always hold up for outdoor grilling. I had been looking for the perfect indoor grill and had several failed attempts until I got this one. I love, love, love this one. It grills just like the outdoors and if you don't have the proper ventilation you will probably set off a few fire alarms. The bottom section of this can be hard to clean but I boil some water in a separate pan and put it in a dutch oven and when finished with the grilling I place this piece in the boiling water and it cleans it right up. There is no reason to get an outdoor grill if you do small amounts of grilling and you have the proper ventilation. I am so glad this product came along.

 "Great Taste. HORRIBLE smoke!!!" 2009-07-13
By S. Stephens (dayton, ohio)
I was very excited to get this grill for my birthday after researching the best indoor grill. I started off making grilled zucchini and found it to be pretty smokey, but the taste was good. I next tried grilled chicken and felt like I was going to pass out from how INTENSE the grill smoked!! I had opened all the windows before grilling and it was still terrible!! I have used it one time since with chicken also, and the same result. I would honestly use this grill several times a week if the smoke wasn't so bad. I will again state that the taste is good, and is pretty close to real outdoor grill flavor. I just can't get over the smoke!!

 "Best Indoor grill" 2009-06-18

I love this grill. I spent a lot of time researching indoor grills before I decided on the Minden. Make sure you heat up the grill very well before you put things on it.

Pros: -The food comes out tasting just like you had grilled it outside.

-Easy cleaning. Dishwasher safe and or pop in your self cleaning oven.

Cons: -The lid is not high enough. When I try to finish artichokes on the grill the lid is to small to cover them.

-It can create a lot of smoke and flare ups. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have lots of windows.

 "So far so good..." 2009-05-29

Just bought this stove and so far so good, it keeps temperature with the lid on, and I used for grilling fajitas, today I'll try chicken but I'm pretty sure it's the most close thing to outdoor bbg grills

the flavor of the fajitas were great I'm not a lover of electric grills and that's why I really recommend this one

 "The perfect range-top grill" 2009-01-28
By Grill Gal (Lake Tahoe CA)
The Minden Master Range-top Grill is perfect for anyone who wants delicious grill flavor and the convenience of cooking indoors. We've tried cooking both chicken and steak filets with great success. The meat seared beautifully on the grate and we were able to maintain a consistent cooking temperature with the lid on. The range-top grill is also very easy to clean. We just removed the silicone handles and popped the grill and grate into the dishwasher. A great value and terrific gift idea!
