 "Excellent small grill" 2009-07-15
By I. Sanders (Chicago, IL USA)
I purchased this grill for my husband's birthday/father day gift. We have own at least 4 small electric grills prior to this one. This is the best yet. It cooks evenly and heats quickly. My husband loves it for the occassional single burger or hot dog. Steaks cooks very well also. I would reccommend this for anyone who just needs a grill for cooking small amounts. It doesn't make sense to startup the big grill for just 2 or 3 burgers.

I wasn't pleased with charcoal or propane gas, so the electric way to grill seemed better. The results are the same without the toxins. I love the way components can be removed and cleaned, no more messy caked grill.

 "Not for steaks" 2009-06-21
By R. Friberg (Grants Pass, OR)
I have a Weber Q and liked it so much, that I bought a Q-140 for my vacation condo because gas grills are not permitted. The style, quality, and construction of the Q-140 is on a par with the Q , which is excellent. So it was with great surprise and deep disappointment that the Q-140 would not come even close to doing a good job at grilling a steak. It doesn't sear the steak like the Q does. It sort of bakes it and leaves marginal, pathetic grill marks. Not what you want in a grill. However, the Q-140 is just fine for things that need slower cooking at lower heat, such as ribs, pork, shrimp, chicken, veggies, etc. as long as the heat setting is set to Max. Good grill, just not for steak. For steak, I have to fall back on pan searing and then into a 325 oven to finish. I've ruined my last steak on the Q-140.

Firstly, don't buy this if your concerned about dealing with unused coals.

Apparently, a few folks in previous reviews had " issue's" with spent coals.

This unit is by far and away the hands down winner of " Best All Around BBQ ", " Denver All Amercian Rib Festival 2008," no doubt, the portability, heat control, award winning form factor, this grill Rocks!

Be careful with heat control, approx. 12-16 hot coals for heat flex cooking. Regulate with top/lower vents. Enjoy

P.S. don't burn your chicken?

 "Great Little Weber!" 2009-06-29
By C. Morris (California Bay Area)
I have used the weber twice so far and it definitely works like its bigger brother, allowing me to control the temperature with ease based on the air-flow vents. Suprisingly the work surface is large, though slow cooking with the coals on one side is more challenging because of the small nature of the grill. All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this for apartment dwellers or campers, especially for the price.

"Lots of ways to use" 2009-06-09
By George B. Sears (Cedar City, UT USA)
I was looking at a very expensive small grill, but it seemed to be more of a roaster than a grill. This grill will roast things, which is recommended for longer times. You simply load the charcoal aways from the center, in two piles, and put the meat in the middle. Actually, some combination of charcoal, in different areas, makes this much better than a gas grill. Plus, the flavor is better than gas.

The grill is solidly built. It is hard to get big flare-ups with this grill with the cover in place. Apparently air is regulated, top and bottom, and it maintains a certain amount of combustion. This is a great feature for burgers (or items with fat). I do them for 5 minutes, turn them, and give it another 5. Terrific. You don't have to run out and move the burgers because there is a big flame under them, from the fat.

Give the charcoal a long time to burn down. Then it is quite hot.

I like making garlic bread with Kaiser rolls. Put butter and garlic on the rolls, and put them butter down on the grill for maybe 4 minutes.

 "Silver Doesn't Mean Second" 2009-06-05
By wallyjabbers (Chicago, IL USA)
The Smokey Joy Silver does everything you'd expect with minimal bells, buzzers or whistles. Easy to assemble, easy to use, easy to maintain & store, and relatively rugged, it just chugs along grilling food with minimal drama (save the occasional flare-up). The main difference between the silver and gold seems to be the gold has a "bucket" handle that flips up over the top of the lid handle, allowing you to lug it to the beach or park. We keep ours on the deck, so I don't care about lugging. And the free shipping made it a no-brainer. It's an American classic. Love it.

"Great results from the start" 2009-07-09
By William J. Mertens (Bethesda, MD USA)
I got one of these smokers a month ago and have been using it every weekend since. It's easy to use, and from the beginning, the results have been delicious.

I've grilled for many years but haven't used a proper smoker before. I should have started sooner. Even the simple recipes included with this Weber produce delicious results. Operating the Weber isn't difficult; it just requires patience (and planning so that your meal is done on time).

I don't have the experience to compare this Weber with other smokers, but here are some things I like: The fire door is wide enough to make it easy to add fuel. True, the door is just pressed metal and is held in place with a latch and by pressure. That's fine with me; a hinge could rust, and the simpler design should last. The built-in thermometer is very handy. This Weber is simple to take apart and clean between uses.

Weber recommends only charcoal briquettes, but I've used both briquettes and lump charcoal, and both worked fine. I didn't experience over-smoking with the lump charcoal. You don't want to contaminate the smoke by using lighter fluid. Paraffin cakes work fine to start the fire, but I've switched to a Weber chimney starter, which also is plenty fast.

 "Great smoker" 2009-06-29
By D. Boheman (USA)
I've used this a couple times now. Works great. I did a lot of reviewing before purchasing this unit. Search the web and you'll be reading for days about the WSM. It was a little more money than I wanted to spend, but it's clear to see why after using it. It does hold temperatures very well. The 18.5 is plenty big for my use. The improvements in this newer model are welcome and really add to it's function.

I'm a little disappointed in the accuracy of the included thermometer, which resulted in the 4 star rating, verses 5. But it is a nice addition, none the less.

I'm still experimenting. As nice as this unit is...real BBQ doesn't make itself. You have to do some work and learn how to use it.

 "My first smoker" 2009-06-15
By T. Baker
I just started grilling with charcoal this spring and enjoyed it. I figured I'd take it to the next level and get a smoker. I was tempted to buy a cheap one from a box store, but bought a Weber. I'm glad I did.

I have used this smoker twice with good results. I did two whole chickens on Saturday and a Boston butt on Sunday. Both had a pretty decent smoke ring. I was able to maintain temperature pretty easily. However, I'm not sure that the thermometer in the lid is all that accurate. I think I may be cooking a little high.

Clean up is pretty easy. I'm still working out a modified version of the Minion Method so I don't have to keep adding coals. The Boston butt was on for 7 hours and I never opened the side door. However, the fuel was pretty much spent at the end. I'd like to get a 10-12 hour cook on a brisket and I'm going to have to figure something out to maintain heat for that long.

I would buy this smoker again. [...]

"A Smoker For A Novice Works SPLENDIDLY!!" 2009-06-15
By Rudy Begonia (The Northern Rockies)
Having been a Weber user since 1975, I figured that this was going to be a great little smoker. I had never smoked a thing in my life (Not entirely true, I grew up in the 60's).

It took about 15 minutes to assemble. A snap. And since it was in 3 major pieces, it was easy to get from the assembly area, the living room, to the smoking area outside. I poured in enough briquets to fill the briquet containment ring. Heck, I didn't know what was too much or not enough. Turned out it was a good amount.

I lit it up just like the Weber kettle I have and got the coals all toasty. Put on the middle stage, got the hose and filled the water bowl, put on the top grate, threw on a 6 pound pork roast that I had put a dry rub on (about.com, dry rub recipes, Kansas city style). Put on the lid and began smoking, the meat that is.

I fiddled with it for about an hour just getting a feel for the air adjustments. It didn't take much to get a temp set perfect.

I added briquets, 10-15, every 90-120 min or so and rustled the others around to keep the ash off of them. A long pair of cheesy, dollar store tongs was helpful for doing this. I also added a stick of well-seasoned plum wood at the same time. Nummy nummy!

8 hours later I had a smoked pork roast that was GONE after being done as all of the neighbors wanted to try some. Needless to say it was a hit with me and a crowd.

Next day I fired it up, put a brined whole chicken on it with NO rub or sauce. 3.5 hours later I had chicken to die for.

My wife told me I could NOT smoke our Westy.

Buy this thing. Painless, fiddleless, fool proof. Nuff said. Straight up. (Did I mention how well made and heavy duty it is?)

Y'all gotta smoke with this think.

"works well; possible to overtighten" 2009-07-26
By Ruth in NM
In general this worked great on our 5-week road trip - easy to attach, no little cylinders to buy and then wastefully throw away. Easy to use, with the one caveat that it is easy to overtighten the end that connects to the tank. When this happens, closing the valve on the tank will not stop the flow of propane to the stove. We found that about 1 in 4 times we used it, we had to slightly loosen that connector after closing the valve, so that the valve could properly seal, the burners would gradually sputter out and leave the hose empty before full disconnection. Odd but not a serious problem as long as you don't disconnect the stove end first.

Not only ECONOMICAL but very ECOLOGICAL... who wants to get Back to Nature and leave the landfill full of those little green bottles?? The disposables last a very sort time and don't have the high pressure of the large tanks, so go ahead, do yourself and the planet and favor and get the adaptor with a full-size tank. Should be a STANDARD option on every Coleman grill.

"Exactly what the Coleman Road Trip Grill needed for the big tank" 2009-06-13
By Meredith (Gladstone, Oregon USA)
I purchased this hose and adapter for my Coleman Road Trip Pro Grill SS, so that I could hook it to 20-gallon propane tanks. I had read that the attachment could be tricky, so my mechanically adept husband did the work of putting it together. He said the only thing he found tricky about it was the thread reversal; instead of the usual "righty tighty, lefty loosie" (right to tighten, left to loosen), he found that it was right to loosen and left to tighten. Otherwise, it is perfect for using the 20-gallon propane tank with the Coleman Road Trip grill. (The grill is portable, so is set up to only take the small camping-type propane tanks. One will need this hose and adapter for larger propane tanks.) The materials are durable heavy-duty, including the hose, which is long enough, as well.

THIS IS A FABULOUS ADD ON FOR ANY GAS GRILL PURCHASED TO USE WITH A SMALL BOTTLE OF PROPANE, IT IS VERY EASY TO FIT INTO ANY LARGE OR SMALL PROPANE TANK BECAUSE OF THE HANDLE. THE PART THAT FITS TO THE GRILL NEEDS TO BE VERY TIGHT THOUGH, IF YOU DON'T TIGHTEN IT VERY WELL THE GAS WILL NOT FLOW INTO GRILL, TAKE THIS IN CONSIDERATION IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET FRUSTRATED WHEN INSTALLING IT.

This was exactly what I was looking for. I have a Coleman stove/grill combo and this adaptor connects perfectly to the big propane gas tank. Small tanks are portable, but for longer usage this adaptor really helps.

To help understand, Amazon should show an image connecting the stove's L-shaped metal connector to the adaptor cable, and would help future buyers a lot (I mean the pic which is on the product manual)

"Quality Is Suffering But Nothing Better Out There" 2009-07-31
By vamommy (Midlothian, VA United States)
First the good. I love the looks of this grill. It is sleek, styling and iconic and I enjoy seeing it on my porch.

- It is much more attractive than one of those monstrous gas grills.

- It seals very tightly.

- Its simple style allows you to cook many different meats in many different ways.

- There are so many accessories available for it and they are easy to find.

Now the bad. Besides the black metal kettle part, everything else seems to be of terribly cheap quality and not what I would expect in this price range.

- The legs and bottom frame are made of shockingly thin and weak metal. I wouldn't buy my kids toys with such cheap trashy metal.

- The wheels are made of cheap hard hollow one-sided plastic. Again, I would not buy a children's toy with such cheap wheels.

- The side handle melted during the first use when we hung the lid from it while cooking.

Let's face it. This is a lot of money for a basic charcoal grill. You are paying for quality and looks. I gave it four stars only on the merit that there simply isn't a viable competitor right now. If there were other options it would not have fared so well. I feel like Weber has taken advantage of their good name and market share and is allowing their quality to suffer.

Shockingly, I would buy it again.

Formerly called "Crazy Dave's Toolshed," and now operating under the name of "Pro-Max," those bozos can't even handle a simple order like a box of staples.  "Awesome grill, just the right size, works beautifully" 2009-07-27
By Penny Duncan (Atlanta, GA)
I've had the grill for about three weeks now and used it about 10-12 times. My family begs me to grill all our dinners now.

The size is perfect for our family of five with room leftover for guests. I love the warming rack, but it does make some of the grill area unusable.

The assembly directions could have used some words, but it wasn't too difficult. As another reviewer stated, it took less than an hour.

Heats up amazingly fast to VERY high heat. The preheat mode got it all the way up to 550 degrees in about 15 minutes, but it only takes about 3-5 minutes to get up to 400+.

I've purchased a Charbroil Smoker Box and set it in the middle. Only worked really well, one time. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

The grates are not terribly easy to clean, but it could be worse. Instead of purchasing the pro-daddy steam brush I use a Weber brush and a spray bottle of water. It does well but only on the surface. Leaves lots behind hanging to the bottom and in between the grates, so I still need to drag it into the kitchen for a scrub.

Made a London Broil and it was amazing! Bison burgers were the best ever. Chicken was great but skinless chicken needs a good coating of oil to keep it from sticking.

Great grill marks. Easy to use. Tremendous heat!

If you are debating between this or the small portable Q, this one has a warming rack and more grill area. I'm happy with my choice. Love the thermometer and handle light.

By Missouri Mom (Columbia, MO USA)
We have purchased at least 5 grills in the past 20 years... gas, then charcoal, back to gas, back to charcoal, so now we are back to a gas grill, and the way this grill is designed, I am certain that the grill itself will last 20 years! This gas grill seems to work as part grill, part oven. It is different from any other gas grill that we have ever owned. It took a few times to get the hang of using this type of grill, but we love it! I would definitely recommend buying this Weber grill.

 "Didn't know what I was missing" 2009-07-17
By LisaD (West Coast)
I've always been a fan of bbq'd meat, but only when someone else did the bbq'ing. For some reason I was never able to achieve the same effect at home on my own bbq. What I had used before was charcoal grills and a no-name gas grill that I bought many years ago. That thing never did work right, it never got hot enough, and one side didn't make it past "warm". After years of hating to bbq I broke down and bought this on the advice of my dad. Let me just say that I didn't know what I was missing and could tell from the very first minute that this grill was far superior to anything I'd ever used before. The heat that came off this little thing blew me away!

The negatives about this are that the side trays are a little hard to put up and down (but may loosen up over time) and the warming rack isn't attached to the hood so it doesn't automatically get out of the way when you open it. And when I was assembling it I ran into trouble on the very first step when two screws refused to cooperate and WOULD NOT SCREW IN! I had to run to the hardware store for replacements, cursing the entire time. Once I got past that step everything else went together without a hitch.

"weber Q320 -- How to use smoker box" 2009-07-14
By Lemlux (Cardiff, Ca. USA)
My grill arrived from Amazon around the beginning of June. Amazingly, the packaging people at Weber forgot to include the cast iron grates -- roughly 1/3 of the total package weight. Amazon shunted me off to Weber for the missing part issue. Weber paid for two day shipping for the grates, but it took them four business days after our phone discussion to actually ship, not the following day as I was promised.

The grill heats fast, heats evenly and heats energy-efficiently. All the goods things said about the grill seem true.

The lack of flavorizer bars made under-grate placement of a smoker box for wood chips a challenge. The outer ring is too close to the grate to accomodate any boxes, but the inner heating tube is 3" below the grate which is barely enough room for a 1 1/2" to 2" thick box to sit under the grate with 1" to 1 1/2 inch space for flames between the center burner tube and the bottom of the smoker box(es). Even so, I had to design and construct a platform that straddled the center heating tube inside the outer heating tube oval.

I cut off two equal length sections of 7/8" wide and 1 5/8" tall extruded aluminum rectangular tubing that just barely fit inside the outer heating tube when parallel to the center tube. I used two lengths of threaded 5/16" bar stock (one near each end) to connect the two tubes in parallel. (I purchased 12" lengths and cut them to fit inside the outer heating tube.) Stainless nuts and galvanized washers allow me to adjust the gap between both sides of the support platform to optimally support whatever smoker box is being used. Finally, four @ 2 1/2" long 5/16" stainless bolts became support structure legs that fit through holes I drilled into the bottom of the aluminum tubing. By adjusting stainless nuts on both sides of these holes I can adjust the height of the platform so that my smoker box (or boxes) fits just below the grate.

When using smoke in this manner please consider that you won't have direct heat on the grate below the box. This is fine for indirect grilling at medium heat with the outer burner on or for slow barbecuing at 200 to 230 degrees with just the center burner set at or close to high. For slow cooking, I've learned to use small chunks and break up bigger chunks for the smoker box rather than use the smaller chips that are consumed after 20 to 30 minutes. Even so, either a large packer briskett or pork shoulder (each close to 16 pounds) being slow cooked should be moved off the grill at least once so the grate(s) can be lifted to allow the smoker box(es) to be refilled. This in turn makes it worth-while to spend $10 on a tool to lift and move the hot grates.
